Other > FAQs > What Is a Computer Identifier?

A computer identifier looks much like a credit card number. It consists of 4 blocks each with 4 characters (0 through 9 and A through F), with spaces in between. Example: 937B C11F 0540 DE71. This is created for your computer when you buy a license for the first time. There are over 16,000,000,000,000,000,000 possible combinations; chances are the identifier for your computer is like no other.

This identifier is like a fingerprint of the hard disk on your computer. It uses absolutely nothing about you, and nothing from the content of any of your files. The identifier leaves you completely anonymous. It is a complex mathematical calculation intended to keep hackers from mimicking your computer in order to get at your information. Another good thing -- nobody can grab your computer's identifier without you knowing it. When you want to share it, you are in control. Apart from your sharing, nobody gets it.
