Products > Pryvit Manual > Plan Internet Locations [1]

The first toolbar icon in Pryvit Professional looks like a globe with connecting network lines. Clicking on this icon launches the procedure to plan Internet locations. The idea is to hide your information safely on the Internet so that you can get it back when you want, and so that you can distribute the information to computers that you choose. This support procedure amounts to editing and adding to a disguised file named ILocate.dat.

Planning locations, requesting access to outside information, and sharing information all involve the Internet. These functions are not included in Pryvit Personal.

The "plan locations" procedure should be run at least once when you first install Pryvit Professional. There must be some locations identified before you can use the "Privatize data" option to send privatized files out to hiding places on the Internet. The list in the file named ILocate.dat can only be changed through this dialog; it cannot be edited directly. It is disguised so that it works only on this one computer and so that other people cannot get at your list.

The box at the top shows a list of your current hiding places on the Internet. Each entry consists of four elements. An IP (Internet Protocol) address may be expressed either as four numbers, each in the range 0 to 255, separated by periods (example: 64.224.160.161) or as a verbal form such as ftp.MyHidingPlace.com. Within this address, files may be hidden in directories and/or a hierarchical sequence of subdirectories. These directories should be given difficult-to-guess names. Next comes the name of a user authorized to post files by file transfer protocol (FTP) to that location. The fourth element is the password required to place files in that location. The password appears on the screen only as asterisks.

If you click on any location in the first column at the top, that location is highlighted. You can then click any one of the three buttons below.

If you click on Delete selection, the highlighted entry is removed from the list. The deletion does not take full effect until the "Save changes" button is clicked.

If you click on Edit selection, the highlighted entry is copied into the five boxes below, where you can make any changes you wish. After you have made your changes, click on Make changes to copy the content of the location, user name, directory, and password boxes back into the main list above. If you decide not to make changes, click on the Cancel button immediately below the Make changes button.

If you click on Test Selection while the computer is connected to the Internet, the program checks that the highlighted selection in the list box really does exist and that files may be posted to the location using the indicated username and password.

No changes are made to the ILocate.dat file until you click on Save changes. If you are making many changes, you might click on this button from time to time after finishing an entry. If you want to save no changes, simply click on Cancel in the lower right corner to go back to the main toolbar.

Next, consider how to add new locations one at a time.
